This is about a love story between a town and the art of ceramics. A surprising and entertaining journey from practical skill to artistic creation.
The story begins in the forest of Desvres where digging revealed the presence of clay, the essential raw material for pottery. Fragments found here testify to this craft being practised as far back as Gallo-Roman times, but production really began in the 17th century. Small workshops appeared throughout the region and their success spread. Factories sprang literally from the ground. And over 300 years, the potteries of Desvres earned themselves a reputation. This journey is explained with fascinating insight in the Ceramics Museum. The story includes elements such as earthenware tiles with geometric patterns, known throughout Europe, but also religious figures and seafarers. There is also the exciting tale of families of potters and artists in residence who have contributed their creativity. A unique journey through a valuable art form.
